About Scott Gwin-
Judge
W. Scott Gwin was admitted to the practice of law in 1976 after
receiving a Juris Doctorate from the Akron University School of Law. He
graduated from John Carroll University, cum laude, in 1973 with a
Political Science degree. Judge Gwin was born in Stark County, Ohio on
November 26, 1951. He is married to Monica Rose Gwin. They have two
children, Molly Rose and Zachary Scott.
Judge
Gwin was in private practice from 1976-1984. His areas of concentration
focused on litigation in criminal felony and misdemeanor cases,
personal injury work, domestic relations and probate law.
Judge
Gwin served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio from
1976 to 1985 working for the ODOT. In 1985, he became the Law Director
for the City of Canton. In this capacity, he was responsible for
criminal prosecution, civil defense representation, labor negotiations,
advising Canton City Council members and the mayor, as well as all other
elected officials in the City of Canton.
In
1988, he was elected Judge of the Fifth District Court of Appeals. He
was re-elected in 1994, 2000 and 2006. Judge Gwin served as Presiding
Judge in 1993, 1995, 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2007. He also served as
Administrative Judge in 1993 and 1999. Judge Gwin was initially
appointed by the Supreme Court of Ohio to the Board of Commissioners on
Grievances and Discipline for a three-year term from January 1,1996 to
December 31, 1998, and re-appointed from January 1, 1999 to December,
2001. Judge Gwin was appointed Master Commissioner, Board of Grievances,
in 2002, and continues in that capacity presently. Judge Gwin was
elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Ohio Court of Appeals Association in
2004. He then served as Chief Justice Elect in 2005, and was elected
Chief Justice of the Ohio Court of Appeals Association in 2007.
Judge
Gwin has been invited to sit on the Supreme Court of Ohio on numerous
occasions. He has taught Appellate Procedure Practices since 1993. Judge
Gwin also has taught Ethics since 1996. He sits on numerous community
boards and is an active volunteer in the Stark County area.
